Arthur S. Rauss,
age 70, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in his home on August 30, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Cecelia Rauss, and is survived by his husband, Matthew Frie; sister, Carol Butler (Ardell); nephew, Matthew Butler (Anna Shwedel); niece, Elisabeth Sparace (Louie); great-nieces, Celia and Cleo; and great-nephew, Bernie. He was much loved and devoted to his family and friends.
Born in Garden City, New York, he attended Villanova University, where he was the “Wildcat” mascot and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in math. He worked as a reservationist for Amtrak before being promoted to internal auditor. Arthur was an active volunteer at Old St. Joe’s Parish for 25 years, aiding its many ministries. He also volunteered with Action AIDS, Mazzoni Center, and the Washington Square West Project. He loved to travel, having gone cross-country by train, and often escorted his mother on trips, including a world cruise on the Queen Mary. In later years, he enthusiastically played pickleball with his husband and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, September 4, from 10:00 a.m. at Old St. Joseph’s Church, 321 Willings Alley, Society Hill, for the reposing. The Funeral Mass will begin precisely at 11:00 a.m.
Entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland, will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 11:30am in the family crypt.
